How I Get Motivated When Life Feels Overwhelming

My Secrets on How to Get Motivated When You Are Stuck and Feeling Powerless

Hi, I am an entrepreneur and motivational coach today. I understand the challenges of feeling stuck, unmotivated, or overwhelmed by life. My personal and professional transformation didn’t result from luck—it came from setting good intentions, building resilience, and shifting my perspective. Whether you’re wondering, “How do I get motivated to work?”, “How to get motivated to clean when overwhelmed by mess?” or even “How to get motivated to study?”, I’ve been there. I’ve had to pull myself out of those trenches.

And if you’re feeling overwhelmed like there’s no way forward, know this—you can change your life. You can climb the steepest hill. I’ve made it my mission to help others overcome adversity because I’ve been through it, too. Below, I’m sharing my unusual but proven ways to break free from inertia and rediscover your motivation.

My Journey from Rock Bottom to Resilience

Life wasn’t always smooth for me. At just 5 years old, I lost my sister, plunging my family into chaos. My mom turned to substances, and our home was filled with destructive relationships. At one point, she was nearly killed—stabbed and later shot. Growing up in that environment, I made countless mistakes and became deeply involved in crime. By 17, I found myself pronounced dead at a crime scene.

But here’s the turning point—a judge gave me one final chance. I chose to fight for my future. Despite having only a seventh-grade education, I defied the odds, becoming a successful entrepreneur and founder of We Level Up behavioral health treatment centers. This business helps thousands overcome challenges just like I did.

I understand the struggle to stay motivated, even in the most minor aspects of life. Finding the motivation to work out, clean, or study can be very hard. These moments can feel overwhelming. But trust me, there’s a way to shift.

The Truth About Motivation

Here’s what they don’t tell you about motivation—it doesn’t always come first. Sometimes, action sparks motivation. And most importantly, your strategies don’t have to be conventional. Below are some of my favorite techniques, designed to meet you wherever you are on your growth path.

My 10 Secret Unique Ways to Get Motivated Fast (and Stay Motivated)

1. Leverage the Power of Pain

Most people run from pain. I embrace it. Why? Because pain is a powerful motivator. I remind myself where I came from, my struggles, and what happens if I stop pushing forward. I use my past struggles as fuel. Instead of fearing failure, I ask: What’s the cost of not taking action? That question alone has kept me on track when my energy was low.

2. Create Small Wins Daily

Massive goals can feel overwhelming. That’s why I focus on momentum. Motivation comes from action, not the other way around. I set small, achievable goals every morning that move the needle forward. Completing these small tasks gives me a dopamine boost, and that momentum keeps me going. It’s about stacking wins until success becomes a habit.

3. Do Something Different

Ever notice how your best ideas come in the shower? Routine tasks ease external stimuli, letting your brain wander freely. When I feel stuck, whether at work or trying to get motivated to clean, I take a break. I do something simple, like organizing my desk or going for a mindful walk. These small, “unproductive” actions often lead to brilliant breakthroughs.

4. Surround Yourself with Energy, Not Excuses

Your environment either fuels your passion or extinguishes it. I ensure I’m surrounded by people who challenge, inspire, and push me to level up. I cut out negativity and excuses. Who you spend time with matters—because their energy rubs off on you. Audit your circle and ask: Are these people pushing me forward or holding me back?

5. Take a break and do absolutely nothing.

When you feel overwhelmed by mess or responsibilities, try doing nothing. For 5-10 minutes, focus on mindful breathing or meditation. This quiet time gives your brain space to recalibrate. While it might feel counterintuitive, often, stepping back can ignite clarity. Studies even show that mindful breathing enhances rational decision-making and creativity.

6. Make a Promise You Can’t Break

I treat my commitments like life-or-death agreements. If I say I will do something, I do it—no negotiations, no backing out. I create public accountability, I inform my mentors and team, and I make it impossible for them to quit. Success is about self-integrity—keeping your promises to yourself, no matter what.

7. Leave some tasks undone

The Zeigarnik Effect shows why we can’t stop thinking about unfinished tasks. It’s also why TV cliffhangers keep you watching. If you’re wondering, “How to get motivated to do assignments?” leave a project midway through when you’re still engaged. When it’s time to pick it back up, you’ll start with enthusiasm and finish strong.

8. Work for Just 5 Minutes

When I dread starting something—answering emails, hitting the gym, or cleaning—I commit to just 5 minutes. It doesn’t feel overwhelming, and more often than not, I keep going! Creating momentum is half the battle. And if it’s a task you genuinely dislike? Five consistent minutes daily will eventually get it done.

9. Turn Setbacks Into a Challenge

I don’t see obstacles as roadblocks—I see them as tests. Every challenge is an opportunity to prove that I can handle more. When life knocks me down, I ask: What’s the lesson? How can I grow from this? The bigger the challenge, the bigger the reward on the other side. If you shift your mindset, setbacks become fuel, not excuses.

10. Do Less to Do More

When life feels overwhelming, the temptation is to overcommit. Instead, scale back. I narrow my focus to just three essential tasks each day. This approach helps me prioritize and fosters a sense of accomplishment, which fuels further motivation.

Three more bonus how to get motivated tips

Here are three more bonus tips on how to get motivated to workout, when depressed, to learn, lose weight, to work, or to do school work:

1. Start with the Fun Stuff

Joss Whedon famously encouraged starting with the fun tasks first. Start with something fun, whether it’s work, cleaning, or setting goals. This will create positive energy for harder tasks. When overwhelmed, I weave something I love (like brainstorming exciting projects) into my daily to-do list.

2. Work for Just 5 Minutes

When I dread starting something—answering emails, hitting the gym, or cleaning—I commit to just five minutes. It doesn’t feel overwhelming, and more often than not, I keep going! Creating momentum is half the battle. And if it’s a task you truly dislike, five consistent minutes daily will eventually get it done.

2. Search Social Media With Purpose to find your passions

Try this when asking yourself, “How can I get motivated to study?” or needing a quick energy reset. Social media, if managed well, can boost productivity. I use it intentionally—scrolling through inspiring accounts, connecting with like-minded people, or laughing at funny content. Setting time limits (thanks to tools like Focus Keeper) gives me a quick mood boost without spiraling into endless distractions.

Looking for Motivation? Start Small. Start Now.

Whether you’re asking yourself “How to motivate yourself to get out of bed”, “How to get motivated to work”, or simply “How to stay consistent when hope feels thin,” know this—you have the power to change. Something as simple as mindful breathing or committing to 5 minutes a day can be life-altering.

And if I could turn my life around from rock bottom, so can you.

You’ll find that motivation isn’t just about forcing yourself into action. It’s about creating the right environment, forgiving yourself on tough days, and learning what sparks your energy. If you’re still searching for direction, I’m here to help. My programs and coaching are designed to unlock potential and create lasting change.

How to Get Motivation for transformation: Tips 1-5

1. Set Clear Goals

Setting clear, achievable personal development goals is one of the first steps in getting motivated. Having a target gives you something to strive for. Break your goals into smaller, manageable tasks to make them less overwhelming. For example, aim for a target of weekly exercise or daily calorie intake to lose weight.

Goal Setting to Achieve Your Goals:

One of the fundamental pillars of staying motivated is setting clear and achievable SMART goals. In my personal development workshops and business coaching seminars, I emphasize the importance of defining your short-term or long-term objectives and breaking them down into manageable tasks. By establishing a roadmap for success, you can track your progress, stay focused, and maintain a sense of purpose along your journey.

2. Visualize Success

Another powerful technique I promote is visualization. Imagine yourself achieving your goals. This mental exercise can help you stay focused and committed. If you’re wondering how to get motivated to do schoolwork, try visualizing yourself acing that exam or earning that degree. Discover more with my vision quest guide.

3. Develop a Routine

Consistency is critical when it comes to motivation. Establish a daily routine that incorporates your tasks and goals to stay organized and focused. This can be particularly helpful if you’re trying to figure out how to get motivated to clean or work out. A set schedule can make these activities feel like a natural part of your day. Check out our morning routine checklist for how to get motivation in action.

4. Surround Yourself with Positivity

Your environment plays a significant role in your motivational levels. Surround yourself with positive influences, whether uplifting music, inspirational short daily positive affirmations and quotes, or encouraging friends and family. This can be especially beneficial if you’re struggling with how to get motivated when depressed.

Apply the power of positive thinking through positive growth mindset best practices. Use daily positive affirmations for women or men to get motivated. Begin gratitude journaling with a gratitude attitude to keep yourself motivated.

Cultivating a Positive Mindset

Your mindset plays a crucial role in shaping your motivation levels and overall outlook on life. I advocate cultivating a positive attitude, embracing optimism, and reframing challenges as opportunities for growth. By nurturing resilience and a positive mindset, you can confidently improve, adapt, and overcome obstacles to maintain momentum toward your goals.

5. Reward Yourself

Incentives can be a great motivator. Reward yourself for meeting small milestones along the way. Whether it’s a treat, a break, or a fun activity, these rewards can motivate you to continue pushing forward.

Celebrating Milestones and Progress:

Acknowledging and celebrating your achievements, no matter how small is a powerful way to boost your motivation and momentum. I recommend periodically reflecting on your progress, celebrating milestones, and recognizing the effort you’ve put into your goals. Acknowledging your accomplishments reinforces a sense of achievement and motivation to continue pushing forward.

Remaining 5 Tips on How Do I Get Motivated

6. Stay Accountable

Accountability is another crucial element in maintaining motivation. Share your goals with friends or join a community of like-minded individuals. This is particularly useful if you’re pondering how to get motivated to lose weight or study. Knowing someone else is watching can provide that extra push you need. If you need that extra support, get an accountability coach to help keep you on plan.

7. Learn from Failures

Failures are inevitable, but don’t let them derail your progress. Instead, view them as learning experiences. Looking at what went wrong and how to improve can help you stay motivated. It can also help you avoid making the same mistakes in the future. Apply continuous improvement strategies to keep going while improving.

8. Keep Learning

One way to maintain high motivation levels is by continually seeking knowledge. Whether reading books, attending seminars, or taking online courses, always seek opportunities to expand your knowledge and grow. This can be incredibly inspiring if you’re looking for motivation to work or study. 10. Take Care of Your Health

Physical well-being has a direct impact on your mental state. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep can significantly influence motivation. To get motivated to work out, start with small activities. Then, slowly increase the intensity.

Embracing Self-Care and Well-Being

Taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being is essential for sustaining motivation and productivity. I emphasize the importance of self-care practices, including exercise, proper nutrition, mindfulness, and adequate rest. Taking care of yourself increases your energy and improves your motivation. It helps you face challenges directly.

Why Motivation Feels Hard (and What to Do About It)

Motivation isn’t a personality trait—it’s a system. When your system is clear and supportive, motivation rises; when it’s vague or overloaded, motivation stalls. My coaching focuses on changing your mindset, methods, and environment. This way, your daily actions will match your goals.

The Three Motivation Levers

  1. Clarity — You know exactly what to do next.
  2. Emotion — You feel why it matters right now.
  3. Momentum — You can see and celebrate progress.

My strategies build all three—step by step.

Strategies on how to get motivated

Top 10 Strategies On How to Get Motivated and Stay That Way

Step 1: Set Clear Goals (and Make Them Winnable)

Why it works: The brain loves certainty. Clear goals reduce friction and decision fatigue.

Do this now

  • Write one top goal for the next 6–8 weeks.
  • Convert to a SMART goal, e.g.:
    • “Walk 30 minutes, 5 days per week, before 8 a.m., for the next 6 weeks.”
  • Create your Goal Ladder:
    1. Outcome: The big result you want.
    2. Milestones (weekly): what proves you’re on track.
    3. Daily actions: the smallest repeatable steps.

Pro tip (Ryan Zofay method): If a step feels heavy, cut it in half until it’s easy to start in under two minutes.

Step 2: Visualize Success (Then Script Your First Move)

Why it works: Mental rehearsal primes attention and reduces resistance.

60-Second Visualization Script

  1. Close your eyes, breathe slowly.
  2. See yourself starting the task with calm focus.
  3. Watch your future self enjoying the results (energy, confidence, pride).
  4. “Lock it in” by naming your first physical action (e.g., put on shoes, open the doc, fill the water bottle).

Make it practical: Finish the visualization by doing that first action immediately.

Step 3: Build a Routine You Can Keep

Consistency > intensity.

Habit Stack Formula: “After I [current habit], I will [new 2-minute action].”

  • After coffee → 10 bodyweight squats
  • After logging into work → open priority task for 15 minutes
  • After dinner → 5-minute tidy

Morning Momentum Checklist (pick 3)

  • Hydrate 12–16 oz of water.
  • 2 minutes of movement.
  • 1 minute of breathwork.
  • Review today’s one must-do.
  • 30-second visualization.

Step 4: Surround Yourself with Positivity (Engineer Your Environment)

Upgrade inputs

  • People: Accountability partner, supportive community, or a coach who challenges and champions you.
  • Media: Save a playlist, podcast, or quote set that elevates your state.
  • Spaces: Lay out your gear the night before, keep your workspace clean, and remove friction (apps, clutter, and snacks).

Mindset refreshers

  • Daily affirmations that are action-tied:
    • “I keep promises to myself.”
    • “I do small things now; big results follow.”
  • Gratitude pulse (2 minutes): List 3 good things you created or noticed today.

Step 5: Reward Yourself (Small Wins, Real Dopamine)

Waiting for the finish line kills motivation. Reward the reps.

Ideas

  • Checkmark streak tracker.
  • 5-minute “victory walk”.
  • Favorite tea or a playlist break.
  • Friday micro-celebration for meeting your weekly target.

Rule: Rewards are earned by actions, not outcomes.

Step 6: Stay Accountable

Accountability turns “I’ll try” into “I did.”

Choose one

  • Buddy system: Share your weekly plan Sunday night, report results Friday.
  • Public commitment: Post a weekly progress note.
  • Coaching: Work with a motivation coach to set targets, audit routines, and remove roadblocks quickly.

Accountability Script

  • Goal for the week: ______
  • Three concrete actions: 1) __ 2) __ 3) __
  • Day + time I’ll do them: ______
  • What I’ll send you as proof: ______

Step 7: Learn from Failures (Fast Feedback, No Drama)

Setbacks are data, not a verdict. Use W.I.N.:

  • What happened? (facts only)
  • Insight: What pattern or trigger showed up?
  • Next move: What tiny change will I test this week?

Pair with WOOP for obstacles:

  • Wish → Outcome → Obstacle (internal) → Plan (if-then):
    • “If I hit a 3 p.m. slump, then I’ll walk for 5 minutes and restart.”
Business level strategy drawing_ WIN formula
For how to get motivated in business, apply the business level strategy drawing WIN formula. You’ll likely find it helpful in your personal ife too.

Step 8: Keep Learning (Feed Your Fire)

Continual growth keeps motivation fresh.

  • Read 10 minutes daily (mindset, skills, health).
  • Take one mini-course per quarter.
  • Journal weekly: “What worked? What will I do differently next week?”

Step 9: Practice Gratitude (Shift State, Boost Grit)

A grateful mind persists longer.

3×3 Gratitude

  • 3 people, 3 moments, 3 personal strengths you used this week.
  • Bonus: Send one thank-you text—connection multiplies motivation.
  • Use a gratitude journal to keep yourself grounded and accountable.

Step 10: Take Care of Your Health (Energy Creates Motivation)

Low energy masquerades as low motivation.

Basics

  • Sleep: 7–9 hours; consistent wake time.
  • Movement: Daily 20–30 minutes, even light counts.
  • Fuel: Protein at each meal, fiber, and hydrate.
  • Sunlight: Enjoy morning light for 5–10 minutes to help set your body clock.

Start where you are. Small energy wins today → bigger motivation tomorrow.

Troubleshooting: Common Roadblocks
  • “I don’t feel like it.”
Start the 2-minute version. Motion creates emotion.
  • “My schedule is chaos.”
Prioritize the task over reactive work (such as messages and emails). Morning > afternoon.
  • “I keep breaking streaks.”
Use the Never Miss Twice rule. If today slipped, plan a 24-hour reset.
  • “Perfectionism stalls me.”
Set a bad-first-draft timer for 10 minutes. Done beats perfect.
