If you had met me years ago, you would have seen a man running from pain—a wounded inner child hiding behind addiction, anger, and destructive behaviors. My story is one of childhood trauma, lost innocence, and ultimately, the powerful healing that comes from doing inner child work. Today, as a personal development coach and someone who’s lived through the darkest valleys, I want to share how I moved from suffering to stop drinking alcohol to healing my inner child, and how you can, too.

Growing up, my life was marked by chaos, loss, and emotional neglect. I lost my parents and my sister at a young age, and the pain was unbearable. My inner child was left feeling abandoned, unloved, and unworthy. Like many who carry childhood trauma, I learned to survive by shutting down my feelings and building walls around my heart. I became neurodivergent in my coping—acting out, numbing out, and spiraling into addiction and incarceration before I was even out of my teens.

I was lost, looking in the wrong places for comfort—chasing validation, sabotaging relationships, and repeating cycles of self-destruction. My inner child was screaming for attention, but I didn’t know how to listen.

It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom that I realized something had to change. I started to see how my childhood trauma was at the basis of negative deep rooted beliefs formenting my adult struggles. Through five areas of personal development, I learned about the concept of the inner child—the part of us that holds all our childhood emotions and unmet needs. It was only then I understood I had to control my emotions to become an emotional intelligence 2.0 pro. I began to understand that healing my inner child was the key to breaking free from the past to create a new future dreaming the American dream into fruition.

Inner child work became my lifeline. I dove into therapy, journaling, and reparenting exercises. I learned to identify the signs of my wounded inner child—codependency, people-pleasing, low self-esteem, and acting rebelliously. I started asking myself tough questions: What did my inner child need that he never received? How could I offer myself the love and safety I craved as a child? I finally woke up to improving my self esteem and boosted my self confidence.

    Being neurodivergent isn’t a flaw. It’s not a defect. It’s a different operating system—a unique blueprint that comes with challenges, sure, but also incredible strengths. Maybe you’ve got ADHD and your brain is wired for constant movement, curiosity, and creativity. Maybe you’re on the autism spectrum, and you pick up on patterns or emotional depth in a way that others just don’t. Maybe you’ve struggled with dyslexia, OCD, or intense sensory experiences—and spent years thinking something was wrong with you.

    But here’s the truth: the world needs the way you think.

    What we call “neurodivergence” is just diversity of the mind. It’s a reminder that not all success looks the same. Not all healing is linear. Not all genius is quiet.

    A lot of us, especially the high performers and survivors of childhood trauma, we’re carrying around an inner child who never felt safe. Who never got their needs met. Who had to grow up too fast or hide their feelings just to be accepted, to be loved, or to be okay.

    That child is still in you. Still hoping you’ll finally turn around and say:

    “I see you. I hear you. I’ve got you now.”

    So, what exactly does nuturing your inner child mean?

    Nurturing your inner child means going back—not to live in the past—but to liberate the version of you who didn’t get the tools, the protection, or the peace they deserved. It’s not weakness. It’s not regression. It’s the most courageous thing you can do. It is part of discovering and becoming the best version of yourself.

    When you give that child what they needed—safety, validation, patience—you stop living from your wounds and start leading from your wisdom. You stop reacting from fear and start responding from love.

I know this firsthand, having walked the path myself as both a survivor and someone deeply committed to recovery and transformation.     1. Name and Acknowledge Your Inner Child

    Inner Child Meaning: Think back to how it felt to be small, curious, and maybe vulnerable. Give your inner child an identity. Mine? I often picture him standing in the mirror, sometimes hurt, sometimes silly, always deserving of love. Call them by name. Write a letter. Look in the mirror and awaken your inner child.

    2. Validate Their Feelings

    When I first started this work, it felt odd to talk to myself with compassion. But validating your inner child’s feelings is essential. Don’t say, “I shouldn’t feel this way.” Instead, try, “Of course I feel this way, and it’s okay.”

    I can almost hear my younger self breathe a little easier when I say this to myself.

    3. Recognize Your Inner Child Exists

    The first time I tried an inner child meditation, I felt ridiculous. But guided exercises—even just visualizing myself as a child and sending that version kindness and curiosity—were surprisingly helpful. All you need is willingness to start.

    I found the most effective breakthroughs came from activities that made me feel safe, seen, and playful.

    • Old triggers don’t hit as hard and as matter of fact they lessen or lose their charge.
    • You play, create, and set boundaries more freely.
    • You set healthier boundaries.
