How I become a self-improver and professional self-improvement coach?
My Journey from Homeless to Becoming a Self-Improver Multi-millionaire Businessman Success
As a self-improver and expert self-improvement coach, I’ve walked a path many might consider impossible. My journey from the depths of addiction to sobriety and success is a testament to the transformative power of resilience and unwavering commitment to personal growth.
Pronounced dead at the scene of a crime
Life didn’t start easy for me. Growing up with parents struggling with addiction, I faced abuse and trauma that no child should endure. By the 7th grade, I had dropped out of school and found myself on a destructive path that led to incarceration and a near-fatal encounter with law enforcement. I was even pronounced dead after a high-speed chase – at the scene of a crime. This moment should have been the end, but it catalyzed my rebirth.
Founder of We Level Up
On October 9, 2001, while in detention, I made a choice that would alter the course of my life forever. I decided to change. This decision wasn’t just about getting sober; it was about wholly transforming my existence. Today, I stand before you with 22 years of sobriety and as the founder of We Level Up, a successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation center that has touched thousands of lives.
My journey taught me that the power to change lies within each of us. Despite our past traumas, we can choose how we perceive and respond to our experiences. By shifting my mindset from victimhood to empowerment, I turned my trauma into a source of strength.
My Life Post-Recovery
Through relentless self-improvement and accountability, I navigated the complexities of addiction and recovery. I committed to therapy, immersed myself in personal development seminars, and engaged actively with recovery groups. I learned that having a structured miracle morning routine, accountability partners, and skillful communications Zen approach to consistent self-reflection life skills are essential for sustained personal growth.
Even after achieving sobriety, I faced new challenges. I found myself battling new addictions – rage, money, and ego. These were distractions from unresolved traumas, leading me to pursue more profound healing through inner child therapy and experiential therapies.
I’ve used my experiences at We Level Up to revolutionize the rehab paradigm. We focus on empowering individuals to reclaim control over their choices, leading to genuinely transformative experiences.

2. Start Small with Micro Habits
Building life-changing habits doesn’t happen overnight. Start small by integrating self-improvement habits gradually. For instance:
- Commit to drinking one extra glass of water daily.
- Spend five minutes journaling every morning.
- Practice gratitude by writing down one thing you appreciate before bed.
Small actions compound to have a significant impact on your life.
Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Successful self-improvers know the value of setting clear, achievable SMART goals. Goals give you direction and a sense of purpose. Make sure your goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This clarity helps you stay focused and motivated, guiding your actions toward your desired outcomes.
3. Craft Good “I Believe” Statements
Your mindset shapes your reality. Good “I believe” statements for self-improvement will reinforce positive thought patterns.
- “I believe I have the power to overcome challenges.”
- “I believe every setback is an opportunity to learn.”
Write these down. Repeat them daily. Watch how your confidence grows.
4. Learn from Stoic Principles
The age-old wisdom in stoic quotes on self-improvement is breathtaking. One of my favorites is from Marcus Aurelius:
“You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
Stoicism helped me stop blaming others for my struggles and take responsibility for my choices.
5. Leverage Self-Improvement Books
Books have always been my escape and my teacher. Here are three game-changing self-improvement books (and yes, you can find self-improvement books in PDF form too).
- Atomic Habits by James Clear

Systematically tackling self-improvement keeps overwhelm at bay.
7. Write Daily Journal Prompts
Journaling is an incredible tool to process emotions and track personal growth. Incorporate self-improvement journal prompts into your routine. Try these:
- What negative beliefs about myself am I letting go of today?

Healing and growth rarely happen in isolation. Joining supportive communities—whether online forums or in-person groups for resilience seekers or recovery enthusiasts—can give you strength through shared stories and compassion.

10. Tackle Addiction to Ego or Rage
Recovery isn’t about fixing one addiction. After getting sober, I still struggled with workaholism, ego, and anger. Therapy helped me identify these behaviors as distractions from deeper emotional wounds.
Acknowledging your triggers is a step toward lasting change.
11. Create Accountability Systems
Find a professional accountability coach or buddy, join a professional mastermind group, or hire an online life coach. You’re much more likely to follow through when you share your personal goals and commit to consistent check-ins.
12. Practice the “Power Hour” Rule
Turn off distractions for one hour daily (yes, your phone). Use this time to meditate, journal, read, or plan your goals.
13. Build a Resilient Positive Mindset through Reflection
When faced with challenges, ask yourself empowering questions:
- How can this situation make me stronger?
- What lesson does this experience hold for me?
Embrace a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is the foundation of self-improvement. It believes that abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work, dedication, and learning. In my personal development workshops, I often emphasize the importance of a growth mindset. You can continuously evolve and reach new heights by seeing challenges as opportunities and failures as lessons.
